Notes and News - November 20, 2009
This week Code 3 is excited to announce the release of another great new model from the FDNY- Engine 75. This famous Engine is the companion to the recently released Ladder 33 and will complete a great new addition to your collection. The two rigs have been requested many times in the past several months and Code 3 is happy to be able to provide the set for the fans of FDNY and collectors in general. Engine 75 will begin shipping next week and the nice thing is you don’t have to elbow thru the crowds of Holiday shoppers to buy this great new replica!
In other news, the response to the Collector Card Give Away that was sent to all renewing Members with their Club Cards has been outstanding. We have decided that one winner is not enough so Code 3 will be drawing for three winners in this give away. A separate winner of a Code 3 model will be pulled from existing Members too so we don’t miss anyone. The cards and letters are still rolling in so we will ask for a little patience as we will keep the drawing open for two more weeks.
Check out the best Christmas model to come your way next week! This model is a beauty and it is in time for Christmas. Our plan is to release the 2009 Christmas Edition next week.

12571 FDNY ENGINE 75 - SEAGRAVE PUMPER

FROM THE BRONX FDNY ENGINE 75
FDNY ENGINE 75 the proud partner to Ladder 33 and a must have for your collection!
The FDNY Firehouse located at 2175 Walton Avenue in the Bronx proudly houses Ladder 33, Engine 75 and Battalion 19. This house is known to be one of the busiest in the City of New York and the crew serves the neighborhood with dedication and hard work in a stellar manner. Code 3 is proud to introduce the replica models of this famous Company of the FDNY. Now you can park both of these rigs right in your collection!
Engine 75 was first organized on December 25, 1901 as Combination Engine Company 75, with a horse drawn 4th size steamer, a horse drawn hose wagon and a horse drawn city service ladder truck carrying a 50 foot hand-raised extension ladder. They became a regular company on May 15, 1907, when Hook & Ladder Company 33 was organized to take over the operation of the city service ladder truck. Their first firehouse was at 2283 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, where they remained until July 31, 2000 when Engine 75, Ladder 33 and Battalion 19 moved to their new and current quarters at 2175 Walton Avenue, Bronx. They are part of the 19th Battalion of the 7th Division and have been one of the busiest engines for many years. In 2008, they led all of the FDNY engine companies in runs with 5,395.
Their current apparatus is a 2003 Seagrave model JB30 1000 gpm Pumper, with a 500 gallon booster tank. It entered service at Engine Company 75 on February 25, 2004 and carries FDNY registration number SP03037. It is one of fifty-six identical 2003 Seagrave 1000 gpm Pumpers. In addition, there are six similar 2003 Seagrave 1000 gpm Pumpers with 750 gallon booster tanks, plus one 2003 Seagrave 1000 gpm rescue-Pumper.

1/64th COMMEMORATIVE EDITION FDNY CHIEF CASSANO ENGINE 31 MACK CF PUMPER

In retrospect, November of 1969 provided a variety of historical footnotes: Elvis Presley returned to the top of the music charts with the hit song Suspicious Minds, on the 19th, Apollo 12 would land on the moon as the second manned mission to the surface, and the conflict in Viet Nam was still very much undecided.
Another footnote to this 40th anniversary year of 1969 had to do with Salvatore Cassano, a young U.S. Army Veteran, who was appointed as a New York City Firefighter and instructed to report to the Division of training. Upon graduating “proby school” Cassano was assigned to Engine Company 31 in Lower Manhattan. January 24th of 1970 was his first day.
At the time, Engine 31 was housed in the quarters of Engine Company 7 and Ladder Company 1 at 100 Duane Street, but was soon relocated to share space with Engine Company 55. A short sprint away, Engine 31 found its home inside 363 Broome Street on February 26, 1970.
The apparatus assigned to Engine Company 31 prior to disbanding, was a 1962 Mack model C95F pumper with a 1000 gpm Waterous pump and a gasoline powered Mack Thermodyne engine. It was delivered to the FDNY on November 14, 1962 and placed in service originally as Engine Company 17 on January 16, 1963. The cost of this pumper was $20,949 and was one of 10 identical Mack pumpers delivered that year. It was replaced at Engine 17 in 1969 and then assigned to Engine Company 257, in Brooklyn, on June 16, 1969. It remained there until 1970 and reassigned to Engine Company 31 on May 19, 1970, replacing a 1954 Mack model 19LS 1000 gpm high-pressure open cab pumper that had been in service as Engine 31 from February 24, 1954 until May 19, 1970. That 1962 Mack remained at Engine 31 until they were disbanded on November 25, 1972 and was then used as a spare for a few years before assignment to the Division of Training on October 10, 1975. It was relinquished on September 13, 1976.
For a good 30 years, Engine 31 operated on 116 Leonard Street until moving, with Water Tower 1, on June 3, 1896, to an ornate new firehouse on the corner of Elm and White Street, Manhattan. Almost a decade later, on December 15, 1905, the official address of this building was changed to 87 Lafayette Street. At that time, it was the biggest and most expensive of all FDNY fire stations with an exterior resembling an ancient castle, the interior constructed of Italian marble.
