Engine Co.79 was originally Hose No.6 of the Chicago Fire Department. Organized on Jan.6,1891.in the Edgewater area north of the city at 5358 N.Ashland Ave.

On Sept.3, 1895 Hose 6 was placed out of service and Engine Co.79 was organized with a steam Pumper. The Company remained in the frame building until Sept.15, 1925 when it was relocated to Truck 25's quarters at 1545 W Rosemont. This was done due to the construction of a new two story brick building being erected on Ashland Ave. They remained in this Fire House until they relocated to a brand new Fire House with Engine Co.83; truck Co.22 & Salvage Squad No.3 on Jan.8, 1969.

On March 19,1970 Engine Co.79 made their last move to a new One story, modern Fire House at 6424 No. Lehigh Ave. on the Northwest side of Chicago, an area which was in need of better fire protection. They shared the house with Ambulance No.92 1 OF 15 Basic Life Support Ambulances.

Operating out of a very small house in fact so small as the joke was a you have to go out side to change your mind. However small the house, Engine 79, though a quiet Company it was always there when needed the most!
