You’d be surprised some of the tricks clients can pull to avoid paying you. Never mess around when it come to your money.

Invoice Due Date

When it comes to receiving your invoice in a timely manner, nothing will force your customer or client to pay faster than a due date. If you were smart, you probably mentioned a late fee charge if the payment wasn’t sent on time etc. Remember this is business. You are not there to be friends or are doing someone a favor. Someone specifically hired you or got sold in your product or service because you deliver. Be very vigilant when it comes to getting paid. So adding a due date is a must.

Company Name

Under your company name, you need to add the exact name your client or customer knows you by or the same one used on the contract. That is what will make your invoice a “legal” document. Most freelancers are unaware of this simple fact and end up losing when the client decides to not follow through on their promises.

Remember this simple lesson …

If it’s not I the contract, it doesn’t exist.

So make sure you use the exact name, address and contact info as used in the contract.

In addition, for contact info, make sure an email and phone number (Can be company’s or your personal one) here.

Invoice Title:

You can leave this as it is unless you want to call it like “John’s Invoice” or “Tara’s Invoice”. Something a lot of freelancers do but we highly discourage it. It looks unprofessional and your potential client might be dealing with a whole bunch of people with the same name.
Unless it’s something casual that you are sending to a friend then avoid this practice like the plague.

Invoice Number

It’s more of a standard practice and further enforces that your invoice is nothing to mess with. We suggest you don’t call it invoice 0001 even if they are your first client ever. Change that number to whatever you see fit but make sure you record it. In case you may need it in the future.

Your Address

An address on an invoice solidifies it’s authenticity. Plus when someone is fulfilling a lot of invoices or are just plain busy, the last thing they want to do is spend extra time when releasing your payment.

If the client remembers your address, they can quickly just glance at the payment and boom! Your invoices just got fulfilled. So where should you put your address? Well, right under your business name.

Business Name

Drum roll please… and the most important element on an invoice award goes to … you guessed it, it’s the name of your business.

After all, you can charge the client whatever you want but if your business name isn’t there? Who the heck are the sending their payment to right?
